Wednesday, June 3, 2020 - 5 things to do for spring decor

Spring. It brings sunshine, rain, flowers, chirping birds, and a welcomed sense of renewal. There’s something about looking out your window and being greeted by sunshine, blooming tulips, and budding leaves that makes you feel fresh, new, and alive. Not only does spring stir up feelings of a fresh start, it also evokes an irresistible urge to declutter, organize, purge, and clean my house from top to bottom. I always take this opportunity to refresh and readjust my home décor, after all, even the slightest of décor changes can make a room feel brand new!

Don’t let your mind jump to visions of fabric swatches, paint chips, tile options, and dollar signs just yet.  These five simple décor items are inexpensive and easy to implement options that will have you ready for spring in no time.

Never underestimate the power of a flower. Whether it’s a large vase overflowing with cherry blossom stems or a simple rustic milk jug filled with tulips, spring florals can instantly pretty-up a room. Remember, not all floral arrangements have to be in a vase. Try decorating with a fresh lavender wreath or a peony swag. If fresh flowers aren’t in the budget, faux florals might just be your best option. This beautiful cherry blossom stem from Crate and Barrel is just begging for a place in your front entryway. And while faux might be expensive upfront, you can store them and decorate with them year after year.

Bed linens

When we refresh for any season, we often focus on the rooms in our house used to entertain guests: living rooms, kitchens, and dining rooms. But what about the room we spend most of our time in, the bedroom? Spring is the perfect time to ditch those flannels and heavy layers for something lighter to mix things up in the bedroom.  You can add texture, patterns, and layers, all while investing in something that’s not overly permanent like furniture or paint. This floral bedding collection from Gluckstein Home would be the perfect addition to a master bedroom or guest bedroom.

Throw pillows

Forget about those plain-jane pillows that came with your couch, for spring you’ll want to swap them out for something more colourful, bright, and impactful. Investing in good quality inserts makes this quarterly decorating exercise easy and less expensive, since you only have to buy the covers. For spring, experiment with bold florals, like this “Midnight Berry” cover from Tonic Living, and pair it with a soft pop of colour, like this turquoise velvet cover from It’s Décor Time. Your friends and family will be sitting pretty the next time they come to visit!

Lamp shades

The always forgotten and neglected lampshade. We all have one or two in our homes that are really more of an eye-sore than an enhancement. Luckily, more and more retailers are starting to sell lamp shades individually, so it’s easy to refresh them come a new season. If you’re adventurous, try a punchy springtime pattern, like this “Juliette” lampshade from Anthropologie, or opt for something more subtle like this seafoam gradient from Bouclair. Take your lights from an item that’s purely functional to one that is beautiful.

Simple accessories

Spring is a great time to declutter and simplify, so start by removing any heavy, large, bulky décor items that can weigh a space down and make it look over-crowded. You want a fresh, light feeling to easily flow through your space. Opt for small tabletop accessories and objects like trays, beads, books, picture frames and candles. This wooden tray from Pier1 would be a beautiful statement piece when layered with these heart prayer beads from The Cross Design and this candle from Indigo. When styling, remember to bring these items together in a grouping of three; any more it looks cluttered, any less it looks empty.

This spring I challenge you to refresh and introduce these five simple elements to your home décor, you’ll not only be impressed with the results, but you’ll be smitten with your newly decorated space.
