- Tips to help mitigate damage from severe storms
While the summer allows us to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, it also brings with it the possibility of extreme weather such as thunderstorms, windstorms, and hail. These severe storms have a heavy potential to cause damage to your property.
Here are some tips to help mitigate potential damage to your home or property. Being prepared is key!
Well-functioning and operational sump pumps are critical. Testing your sump pump and regular maintenance is important. Adding a battery back-up sump pump means better protection and added peace of mind.
Check any eavestroughs, downspouts, and exterior drains to ensure they are clear of any obstructions so water can drain away quickly from your home.
Secure any patio furniture, balcony furniture, or any other outdoor contents from high winds.
Close all windows, doors, and skylights before a storm event.
Pay attention to any severe weather alerts or upcoming storms in order to prepare appropriately.
Unplug electronics or protect your property with surge protectors.
Stay on top of home maintenance. Replace loose or aging shingles, seal leaks, fix cracks, and/or repair damaged eavestroughs or downspouts.
Trim tree branches and trees on your property. Windstorms can easily bring down large trees and branches which can cause damage to your home or a neighbor's property.
Identify safe rooms in your home. In the event of a tornado or tornado warning you will want to be in an interior room in the basement or lowest level of your home.
